Fossilized sponge coral, also known simply as sponge coral, is a type of coral that has undergone a process of fossilization over millions of years. Coral itself is formed by colonies of marine invertebrates called coral polyps, which secrete calcium carbonate to build their skeletons. Over time, the skeletons accumulate and form coral reefs.
